Celebrating Freedom

by Jack Baric May 28, 2010

What do lamb, mostaccioli, beer, wine, music, and dancing in the street have to do with democracy? On Sunday, May 30 the Croatian-American Club will once again host people from all over North America [...]

Ready… Camera Roll… Take 7… Action!

by Jack Baric May 1, 2010

It seems like just a couple months, but it’s been closer to eight years ago that the seeds for the 7th Annual L.A. Harbor International Film Festival (LAHIFF) were first planted over cocktails on the deck of the Ports O’ Call Restaurant (and don’t most creative ventures seem to start best when drinks are involved?). Throughout the years we have all seen the athlete who says, “Hi Mom,” when put in front of a camera on national television. Today, we see the love for Mom depicted in a recent McDonald’s commercial. To Mom

by Senior Officer Joe Buscaino, LAPD Harbor Division May 1, 2010

I have known a lot of wonderful and loving mothers in addition to my own Mom. My wife, my grandmother, my sisters, my mother-in-law, my aunts, and numerous other relatives and friends come to mind. I have also known a lot of heroic single moms (and dads) who have sacrificed and worked hard for their [...]

The Window

by Jennifer Marquez May 1, 2010

We own a 1917 house and there is always something that needs to be done. These projects came to a standstill when two bigger priorities came along: our two sons. Most of the windows are the old-fashioned type that you push up to open. When the bedroom window wouldn’t stay up, my husband would put [...]

Emergency fixes are being implemented to prop up the economy: bailouts, job creation programs, etc. They’re a start. But our discussion became more about [...]

Spring Cleaning is in the Air

by Janice Hahn, L.A. City Councilwoman May 1, 2010

These days, we can all use some good news. And here in San Pedro, we have some. After years of working to clean up our air and reduce truck traffic in our community, we are finally seeing some real progress. In 2001, my brother, former L.A. Mayor James Hahn, formed a “No Net Increase Task [...]

Degrees of Separation

by Steve Marconi May 1, 2010

Just as a rock thrown into a puddle of water sends out ever-expanding ripples, a story about someone from San Pedro inevitably reaches out and touches other lives, sometimes in the most unexpected ways. Take, for instance, last month’s column about Greg Sharp. At the same time I was getting to know Greg, I was [...]
